Drawing from the multiple identities an individual carries through modern society, 中心 Balance highlights the demand on each of us to perform a continual act of balancing across these positions. The constant negotiation of balancing is driven from both personal and collective experiences resonating from diverse communities. 中心 Balance (中心 denoting the center of mind, heart, thoughts, or will) is not tied to a static anchor point, but a dynamic equilibrium that emerges through the entanglement of shifting identities, cultural terrains, and emotional fluctuations.
The series of works in this project are built from life-size self-portrait prints alongside collages constructed from discarded editions. A pivotal turning point emerged from embracing the artist’s vulnerability: overwhelmed by competing responsibilities, Shin accidentally mis-trimmed an entire edition of one hundred prints at once, necessitating a complete re-run. Rather than discarding the error, these one hundred misprinted sheets were integrated into the collage work. This salvaging of the material became a conceptual embodiment of resilience, illustrating that balance is not a rigid perfection but an ongoing labor of navigating conflicting roles and fluid thoughts.
